Texas Longhorns secure Sweet 16 spot with upset win over Gonzaga
In a thrilling display of resilience and tactical execution, the Texas Longhorns have advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2026 March Madness tournament after defeating Gonzaga 74-68. The victory is particularly significant as Texas began their tournament journey in the 'First Four,' defying expectations to become one of the most dangerous teams in the bracket. The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading leads throughout the second half. However, a late-game surge driven by defensive stops and clutch free-throw shooting allowed Texas to pull away in the final minutes, silencing the pro-Gonzaga crowd.
Key to the Longhorns' success was their ability to neutralize Gonzaga's interior scoring while maintaining a high tempo on offense. Texas players demonstrated remarkable composure under pressure, a trait that head coach Rodney Terry has emphasized throughout their improbable run. Gonzaga, a perennial powerhouse, struggled to find their rhythm against the aggressive Texas defense, leading to uncharacteristic turnovers at critical moments. The upset has sent shockwaves through the tournament brackets, as many analysts had picked Gonzaga to make a deep run into the Final Four. Instead, it is the Longhorns who will move on to the next round, carrying a wave of momentum that makes them a formidable opponent for anyone in their path.
As the tournament progresses, the focus now shifts to the upcoming Second-Round games, including the highly anticipated matchup between High Point and Arkansas. The 2026 tournament has already been marked by several eye-opening upsets and standout performances, reflecting the unpredictable nature of college basketball. For Texas, the win over Gonzaga is a testament to their growth over the season and their ability to perform on the biggest stage. Fans in Austin are celebrating the achievement, as the team prepares for its next challenge in the Sweet 16. With the NFL Draft also looming and mock drafts already circulating, it is a busy and exciting time for sports fans across the country, but for today, the spotlight belongs firmly on the Longhorns.
