Venezuelan Nobel laureate María Corina Machado’s event canceled ahead of prize ceremony

An appearance by Venezuelan Nobel Peace laureate María Corina Machado was unexpectedly canceled on the eve of the official prize ceremony. Machado, a prominent opposition figure in Venezuela, had planned the event to draw international attention to the ongoing political and humanitarian crisis in her home country.

The cancellation is indicative of the continued political pressure faced by critical voices within and outside Venezuela. Machado has been a strong advocate for democratic change and has repeatedly criticized the current regime for human rights abuses and the erosion of democratic institutions.

The sudden removal of her event from the schedule sends a negative signal about the freedom of assembly and speech, even in a context related to a high-profile international award. This incident will likely amplify calls from global human rights organizations for greater protection and recognition of Venezuelan political dissidents.
