At least 1 dead and 500 injured as Typhoon Champi batters Taiwan

At least one person was killed and more than 500 injured as Typhoon Champi brought strong winds and torrential rain to Taiwan on Saturday (Oct 24). A man was swept away by waves off Liuqiu island, according to Taiwan’s fire department. One of the strongest storms in the Pacific this year, Champi brought winds of up to 227kmh to some coastal areas. The storm also knocked out power to more than 288,000 homes, while authorities across parts of northern and central Taiwan, including Taipei, ordered schools and offices to remain closed for a second day.
