Lula wins unprecedented fourth term as Brazil’s president

Supporters of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his supporters celebrated on October 25, after the electoral court declared him the winner of an unprecedented fourth presidential term. 80-year-old Lula defeated Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of the far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro who was indicted for planning to orchestrate a military coup and is currently under house arrest due to health reasons. The victory marks another comeback for Lula, who was jailed on corruption charges from 2018 to 2019 before his convictions were annulled, paving the way for his return to the presidency in 2022.
