Prosecuting haze-linked firms may pave way for class action suit

Singapore has issued preventive measure notices to 10 companies in Indonesia with links to the fires causing the current haze. Under the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act, the companies are required to deploy firefighting personnel, prevent further burning on their land and submit action plans to the National Environment Agency. If any of the companies are found guilty, it could pave the way for individuals to pursue compensation claims for losses, including lost profits, injuries and property damage, says environment law expert Sean Tseng.
